Well if the Coen's are on the list, you can pretty much suggest any of them as they all contain some version of "show within a show", so let's throw their (arguably) most accessible iteration into the ring: The Big Lebowski
Unrelated, but I'd love to see a nautical (navy or pirate) theme, with movies such as "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". It could be the same month as the release of Return to Monkey Island to stay topical all-around. :)
Maybe we can do a special episode sometime just called "Casey Is Depressed" where Anna and I talk about Tenet, but nobody else has to watch it :) I'm just assuming I would be so unhappy...
I'm luke-warm on "Director-themed" months because I'm not sure how much I care about comparing works by the same director, you know? It seems like a lot more interesting to watch related movies by different people, so you can see what they do differently. I don't know. Just my $.02...
A different way to get Tenet in there would be to do a "playing with time" thing, where we do movies that aren't entirely linear, or something?
"Paris When It Sizzles" pokes a bit of fun at this sort of movie within a movie. I loved it, though as with many movies from that long ago, some scenes would be considered cringe these days.
There is also Stardust Memories by Woody Allen, I don't remember if it's any good though. And there's Intervista by Fellini that is supposed to be 4 films into 1.
I think "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover" could be a great fit for the theme. It's not _about_ a show within a show, but it's made like a larger-than-life theatre production, but in the form of a movie. Also, I really love this movie and would like to know what you think about it :)
"Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" would be another movie that could fit this theme.
I saw "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover” in a film class in college and I remember walking out of it feeling sick. It actually left me feeling a bit traumatized 😅
But that was a long time ago... I’d be willing to try it again...

I will just continue with my ulterior motive of trying to get your reactions on bad movies that can stand their own against sea quest. So please watch
Tammy and the T-Rex

Another vote for nautical movies! I'll think about it so I can come up with suggestions :)
That's great, yes. Maybe that should be July?
Master and Commander is so great! I think swashbucklers would be super fun theme. Definitely keeping that in mind for a future month...

I could maybe see us doing a Nolan themed month sometime? If the Movie Club is okay watching Tenet, I would do it.

That’s reasonable!
I am nothing if not reasonable.

If you’re up for a silent film, Sherlock Jr (1924) was a direct inspiration for Purple Rose of Cairo.

I have not seen it, but there is Trans-Europ-Express by Robbe-Grillet.
The Truman Show
Adaptation would be a great pick for this. I also think any of these would be pretty good as well based on that general theme:
- The Player
- Ed Wood
- 8 1/2

I like Greenaway too but never saw this one. I'd like to watch it some time, maybe with the club, who knows!
Yeah I can see how this movie can be traumatizing! So maybe it is not the best choice for a movie club …

Very good question... hmmm......
